One sought-after goal has been to establish that in the case of the 3D Navier-Stoke equations, such stabilization is indeed possible with localized, boundary-based feedback controllers which are also finite dimensional and explicit. This goal was achieved in the paper I.Lasiecka, B.Priyasad and R.Triggiani, Archive of Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 241, 1575-1654 (2021). It required abandoning the prior traditional Sobolev setting and introducing a suitable Besov space setting with tight indices. The successes on the Navier-Stokes equations have been exported more recently to the Bussinesq systems, which model viscous incompressible heat conducting fluids.
